untitled 0808 installation - Berlin

[08-09-2012]

untitled 0808
(World Premiere)
by Francisco López

ohrenhoch, der Geräuschladen - the Noise Shop | Weichselstr. 49 | 12045 Berlin-Neukölln
To hear on Sunday 23 and 30 September 2012, 2pm - 9pm:

ohrenhoch presents on Sunday 23 and 30 September 2012 the new loudspeaker installation "BassBox" in the ohrenhoch basement (Prussian vaulted ceiling).
BassBox will be inaugurated with the piece by Francisco López "untitled 0808" created specially for ohrenhoch.
The new loudspeaker installation is a construction conceived especially for acousmatic tape pieces with strong basses.
BassBox at the same time is also a loudspeaker conception which involves and expands the rooms or spatial sound in most multifaceted ways.
BassBox quasi is the center with the bass - and from this box the other rooms can be played on acoustically with additional loudspeakers collaterally.
The classic ceiling loudspeaker installation in the shop space will be maintained as a matter of course. So from 23 September 2012 there will be two sound systems at ohrenhoch.
The idea of BassBox was realized by Knut Remond, and the technical development and the transport case were made by Georg and Jonas Morawietz.
'ohrenhoch' with Katharina Moos and Knut Remond is pleased to offer you another highlight in the Sound Gallery with BassBox. The choice of the pieces or compositions for ohrenhoch will be even wider and even more multifaceted.

Available at ohrenhoch:

SOUNDWORKS exhibition - ICA London

[06-06-2012]

Francisco López

“Heitsi-Eibib-Rec” - sound piece for the Exhibition:
“SOUNDWORKS”
@ ICA, London

19 June 2012 - 16 September 2012

One hundred new sound works have been produced by artists from all over the world. Selected by our curators and art institutions worldwide, the artists have been invited to submit a sound file, taking its stimulus from themes evoked in Bruce Nauman's Days, presented concurrently in the lower gallery as part of our season on sound.

SOUNDWORKS embraces the ephemeral nature of sound, and presents an online platform that doubles as a virtual exhibition space. This site aims to make the works internationally accessible, a place to explore the genre as a medium which is simultaneously inclusive, interactive, and subversive. It includes a wide range of audible approaches by artists who have been working with the medium for many years, as well as artists taking their first venture into the sonic arts.

Ghost Forest - Sónar 2012

[05-06-2012]

Sound Installation by Francisco López
Mies van der Rohe Pavillion

Presented by Sónar, Fundació Mies van der Rohe and Eina
Curated by Lluís Nacenta

Av. Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 7 - Barcelona
14th, 15th and 16th June 2012
From 10am to 8pm

Sónar Festival 2012
http://www.sonar.es/en/2012/pg/sonarextra_92

Fundació Mies van der Rohe and Fundació Eina join SónarExtra with an installation by sound artist Francisco López.

Forests are natural acousmatic environments. The typical intricacy of their structure amplifies the conditions for multi-layered -and sometimes quite complex- sonic phenomena whose sources can hardly be seen.

“Ghost Forest” is a compositional transposition of a multitude of original recordings, made in diverse forests all over the world, into the space of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. With the aim of creating an
immersive environment, the original captured “reality” has been evolved through extreme filtering. This process has been carried out to reveal a ghostly spectrum of frequencies of the transposed forest environments.

The different “spectral” sonic layers are automatically mixed live in the space (in ever-changing combinations) through a special sound system specially designed for this installation. These sounds have been thoroughly worked in the studio as an automatic composition, both for this specific sound system and for the actual space of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion.

Original environmental sound matter recorded at multiple locations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Greece, Japan, Senegal, and the USA between 1990 and 2011. Created at “mobile messor” (Amsterdam, Besançon, The Hague, Barcelona) in 2011-12.

The Source

[29-04-2012]

Exhibition at Netherlands Media Art Institute, Amsterdam
May 10th - June 25th 2012
http://nimk.nl/eng/the-source

On the interactions of extraterrestrial light with the atmosphere and biosphere an exhibition and a meeting of Synergetica: Art-Science Society.

Exhibition opening: Wednesday, May 9th, 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM with Synergetica
lectures and performance: May 9th, 7:30PM to 9:00PM

Opening hours exhibition: Tuesday through Friday 11 am - 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.

The phenomenon of light can, due to current scientific progress, become the new tool for the new artist. - Marcel Duchamp

Both the messenger and the message, both particle and wave, extraterrestrial light carries information about the entire universe into the eye of the beholder. As it unfolds into all the diverse structures of matter, eventually breathing life into some of them, light shapes its environment, and in turn, the environment reshapes light. Mastering this two-way tuning process can lead to ‘enlightenment’, as exemplified by recent breakthroughs in artificial photosynthesis, a nearly lossless translation of sunlight into bio-solar fuel. Earthbound solar, galactic and interstellar radiation can also be aesthetically harnessed to procure the optimal fuel for the human imagination. The Source reveals extraterrestrial light as an inexhaustible muse as well as a wellspring of clean energy for Earth’s inhabitants. Part of StudioLab, an EU art-science initiative, The Source will open with a presentation about artificial photosynthesis by biophysicist, Raoul Frese (VU, Amsterdam). Researching photosynthesis at the supramolecular level, Frese implements photosynthetic bio-polymers in hybrid solar cells and mimics photosynthesis using synthetic molecular compounds. “Every 90 minutes, the sun radiates an amount  of energy equal to the annual consumption of the world population. By the process of photosynthesis, plants, algae and certain bacterial species have mastered the direct utilization of this energy to power their metabolism. Now we must learn from the natural process. (R. Frese)”.

Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec’s installation, Virtual Hole - Sun 1:1 (2011) invites audiences to experience the Sun’s intricate radiance through a full-spectrum indoor simulation, occurring synchronously with the ever-changing sunlight directly outside the exhibition space. A sensor on the roof of the building feeds the amplitude, color temperature and diffusion of sunlight into a synthetic environment that analyzes and mirrors these subtleties. One’s architectural confines are intended to dissolve, allowing the immaterial, transitory surroundings to saturate the dwelling.

In Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand’s Memory Vapor (2011), visitors will encounter another kind of extraterrestrial light, a ubiquitous cascade of subatomic particles, known as cosmic rays. Customarily beyond the reach of the senses, ionized nuclei, protons, electrons, as well as more exotic antiprotons and gamma-ray bursts continuously arrive to Earth from outer space. Most of this subatomic cascade does not even originate in the solar system, but from within our galaxy, and the fastest, highest energy particles are likely catapulted from extragalactic supernovas or active black holes. Within the low temperature gas (-200 °C) of the Memory Vapor installation, these cosmic rays are rendered visible as they are trailed by threads of condensation droplets. A white laser sheet scans and illuminates the emerging droplets, transforming the gas into a dynamic prism that vastly extends the spatio-temporal perception of particle trajectories.

Bioacoustic Phenomena (2010) immerses audiences in the primordial waters where light-imbued matter first came to life. A collaboration between generative video artist Paul Prudence and composerbiologist Francisco López, this audiovisual installation imagines the delicate cellular dynamics that marked the inauguration of the biosphere. Akin to the subatomic particles in Memory Vapor, specifically evolving entities come in and out of existence, sparking a sense of the thin line dividing living and inanimate matter. Each of these artworks brings into focus the invisible source of it all, and the foundation of all visibility.

This exhibition is part of Studiolab, an EU art-science initiative, and is hosted by the Netherlands Instituut voor Mediakunst with the generous support of the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, EU 7th Framework Programme, European Cultural Foundation, Kapelica Gallery/ Zavod K6/4, Zavod Projekt ATOL, Stichting Optofonica, Ministry of Culture Slovenia, Municipality of Ljubljana, Mondriaan Fonds - Amsterdam, GAVITA Holland BV, Ocean Optics, Hans Graafmans - Lightco Nederland BV.

Studiolab is a 3-year Europe-wide initiative that merges the artist's studio with the research lab. Funded by the EC Seventh Framework Programme in 2011, Studiolab is a European network that provides a platform for creative projects that bridge divides between science, art and design. Through a synergistic network, Studiolab is inspiring new approaches to environmental, technological and social challenges and providing a template for innovative art science collaborations. Studiolab involves interaction between 13 leading centres of scientific research, artistic excellence and experimental design accross 12 European countries. These partners are collaborating and working with world leading scientists, artists, and designers to pilot projects using integrated processes of incubation, education and public engagement. www.studiolabproject.eu/

The Secret Show

[05-04-2012]

Francisco López & James Webb
Date: Thu 5 April, 7.30pm (approximately 2 hours)
Venue: Birmingham City Centre

On Thursday the 5th of April 2012, 70 people attended an event that they knew nothing about. Having seen an advert asking only “Can you keep a secret? Will you give us one night of your life?,” these adventurous individuals booked a ticket for this mysterious event.

The guests learnt that the entire night’s proceedings were, of course, a secret and they should await further instructions. When instructions came they were simply informed to meet at one of a range of bespoke pickup points in the city at 19h30 on the evening of the event.

At that time the guests were met by a guide who, after blindfolding them, transported them to an undisclosed warehouse location.

As the “audience” entered the space they started to perceive a network of foreign sounds surrounding them. Given no information, and sworn to silence and secrecy, and blindfolded at all times, the guests were seated in the space as the audio intensified.

Unbeknownst to the invitees, they were listening to a live immersion concert by sound artist Francisco López staged in a scenario designed by James Webb.

Just before the concert concluded, the audience were led out of the venue and transported back to their original pickup locations. They were told nothing about what had happened that evening and merely given a business card with instructions to access the URL printed thereon from midnight, Saturday 7th April 2012.

Brooklyn Issue Project Room

[09-03-2012]

Stephan Moore and ISSUE Project Room have commissioned a new piece by sound artist Francisco López for Moore's unique multi-channel sound system. Francisco López has worked with a variety of multi-channel systems, both in live performances and sound installations, from constellations of small transducers to Wave Field Synthesis systems with hundreds of speakers, and acoustic spaces ranging from concert halls to galleries to underground water reservoirs. For his new piece, López has worked in residency at ISSUE Project Room to develop a detailed sonic construction resulting from the actual space and multi-channel sound system. It is a true site-specific composition that unfolds with richness and detail as an intense and immersive experience inside a self-contained virtual world of sound.

Live performances: March 24th and 25th, 2012 at 8:00PM

The City as Sound - seminar Rotterdam

[09-01-2012]

Soundtrackcity / International Film Festival Rotterdam

January 27 2012 14.00 – 17.00 LantarenVenster
With amongst others: Justin Bennett, Kees Hin, Raviv Ganchrow, Marcel Cobussen, Jacqueline Oskamp, Francisco López.

The City as Sound marks the start of Soundtrackcity Rotterdam and is a seminar on the metamorphosis of the city under the influence of sound. About how a locative soundtrack can radically alter our experience of the city. How can sound change our experience of reality in a cinematic experience? And if our experience of reality has long since been turned into a movie, what movie are we in?
When we get out of the cinema seat and go into town, do we play a role or do we direct the film? Are we in a soap, a thriller or a well made documentary? As in the cinema it is the soundtrack that determines.

27 of January in LantarenVenster filmmakers, musicians, sound artists, scientists, film lovers and the public engage in a dialogue about their experiences with the imaginative power of soundwalking.

Speakers at the seminar include amongst others: Justin Bennett, Kees Hin, Raviv Ganchrow, Marcel Cobussen, and Francisco López. Moderator Jacqueline Oskamp.

Participation in the seminar is free. There are limited places available, therefore registration is required. You can register by sending an email to Katrien Lamers. Do not wait too long to register, given the limited number of places.

TIP: participants of the seminar have the opportunity to get discount tickets for the soundwalk of Katarina Zdjelar & Maziar Afrassiabi prior to the seminar. This soundwalk starts at 12.30. If you like to book tickets for this soundwalk, please indicate this in the email.

created for SoundtrackCity and the International Film Festival Rotterdam

LantarenVenster: Otto Reuchlinweg 996, Rotterdam
January 26-30: 14:30 (approx. 1 hour)
January 31- February 4: 20:00 (approx. 1 hour)
Tickets: 11€

A set of surreal virtual sonic micro-worlds created from original sound environmental recordings gathered around the Kop van Zuid - Erasmusbrug area.

López’s work with field recordings creates new sound worlds of experience from the sonic substance behind the apparently mundane. In this soundwalk, he has dramatically transmutated original recordings from Rotterdam to give rise to several virtual, vivid, hyper-real, sonic micro-worlds.

SONOPOLIS World Premiere (Radio)

[05-01-2012]

DeutschlandRadio Kultur
January 13th, 2012 - 00:05AM
45 minutes

Commissioned by the Studio Akustische Kunst in Cologne in 2011, “SONOPOLIS” is a sound piece created by means of a dramatic evolution of original recordings of urban sound environments all over the world, recorded between 1985 and 2010. Spanning more than one hundred cities in the five continents - from Montreal to Ushuaia, from Lisbon to Moscow, from Dakar to Cape Town, from Taipei to Melbourne - I have explored the sonic matter of these urban environments in all their multiplicity and complexity.

In contrast with common representational, documentative or descriptive takes on location recordings, however, my approach to sonic matter is phenomenological and compositional. Fragments, details, and textures contained in these recordings have been selected and used in a massive process of editing, reconfiguration, processing, layering, polishing, iterative mixing, etc., to give rise to a new unexistent, magnified, dramatically hyper-real “polis”. The result is a highly “abstract” immersive sonic environment in which the virtual spaces are combined and succeed each other through an internal “geography” laden with acoustic nuances, wide dynamics (from the subtle to the monumental), textures, and sound events of a large variety.
