New No York: Francisco López plus James Plotkin
at Tonic, NYC
Sat, Dec 27 2003 - 8pm $8

Francisco López: A sonic immersion experience. Please bring a blindfold. Over the last twenty years Francisco López has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world. Destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and nature sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power, proposing a blind, profound and transcendental listening, freed from the imperatives of knowledge and open to sensory and spiritual expansion. One of the leading figures of the international experimental underground, he has realized concerts and sound installations all over Western and Eastern Europe, North, Central and South America, Japan and Australia and his work has been released by more than one hundred record companies throughout the world.

James Plotkin: Well known within circles of guitar experimentalists, James Plotkin gained recognition in the late 80's for pushing the sonic limits of guitar in extreme forms of metal. Recent days have him returning full circle to the absurd extremeties in music with which he began. He has been lucky enough to work with Michael Gira, Mick Harris, Ikue Mori, and John Zorn among others, and has been an integral part of groups including Scorn, Old, Khanate, Phantomsmasher, and Death Ambient.

Directions:
Location: Tonic is located at 107 Norfolk Street between Delancey and Rivington Streets in Manhattan's Lower East Side.
By Train: You can take the F train to Delancey Street or the J/M/Z trains to Essex Street.
Once you exit the station walk east (towards the Williamsburg bridge) on Delancey Street and take your first left onto Norfolk. You will see Tonic about half up the block on your left.
Parking: Parking is sometimes available on Norfolk Street. There is also a municipal parking garage right around the corner on Essex Street between Delancey and Rivington.

Francisco López and Daniel Menche
+ Visuals by Jorge Simonet
Live at Recombinant Media Labs, San Francisco
Saturday, November 29th 2003
FRANCISCO López
two blank spirits
a two-part show generating two phenomenologically antithetic, yet spiritually close, immersive worlds. Both of them require time and commitment, they are open in their potential and meaning, they convey synaesthetic, multi-layered environments under a semblance of simplicity, they transform the normal perception of time and space, they forcefully refuse procedural explanations and the claim of communication. Both of them offer freedom in return of passion, and viceversa. The first phase - "untitled #91" moves around the limits of aural and visual perception through a hyper-slow universe projected on a large scale. It has been created in collaboration with film-maker Jorge Simonet. The second phase - "untitled 11/03" digs in a manifold sonic universe of considerable intensity and takes place in complete darkness in a locked room with a surround sound projection system.
Over the last twenty years Francisco López has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world. Destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and wilderness sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power, proposing a blind, profound and transcendental listening, freed from the imperatives of knowledge and open to sensory and spiritual expansion. One of the leading figures of the international experimental underground, he has realized concerts and sound installations all over Western and Eastern Europe, North, Central and South America, Japan and Australia, and his works have been released by more than one hundred record companies throughout the world.
DANIEL MENCHE
sound of vehemence "it's very difficult to explain or interpret what my music conveys - so that's why i work hard so that the music can speak for itself - no matter how vague the message or imagery - the energy of what it's communicating is what remains most evident."
-- Daniel Menche

"the space between the amplified speakers and the listeners ears is my primary focus and how that space can be maximized with sound energy." --
Daniel Menche
Daniel Menche has established himself as a musician with a sense of focus and determination uncharacteristic in a genre known for its randomness and chaotic structure. rather than creating "noise," he strives for order and cohesiveness. his presentation of sonic structures is similar to the way a writer depicts a story, an allegory seems to arise, which uses confusion as a symbol for the imaginative process in its quest for beauty; aural intensity is not a representation of confusion or the chaotic, but a concerted effort to provoke the listeners imagination, to stimulate thought, generate intensely powerful sounds, and to inspire beauty. attempting to avoid the theoretical aspects of music, menche's sonic constructions enhance the mystery of confusion (in its tonal form) in an effort to stimulate the imagination.

Jacques Brodier
The French sound-artist and -researcher Jacques Brodier in concert is somewhat like a Theremin-player using an impressive, self-made radio-receiver to manipulate short wave signals. "According to the theory of the Big Bang, the initial explosion at the beginning of the universe created an limitless spectral chaos, an endless potential of possibilities. The human reality would then be 'a mental tunnel', dug out by numerous generations in the geology of this chaos. Our ideas make the threshold of this tunnel visible, by a carpet of images and signs." (J.B.)

Claude Wampler
Visibility is overrated, like fame. 'Song and Dance (and a good movie)' is an installation in four parts. One section is the live re-creation of the last scene from Claire Denis' Beau Travail in which Denis Lavant dances in a disco. For this part Wampler made a replica of the set and learned the choreography and, costumed as Denis Lavant, executed the dance. "A critical posture becomes unavoidable through insisting on un-stating any point of perspective, through not allowing a point of view and yet generously and relentlessly providing entertainment." (in co-production with Het Productiehuis Rotterdam)

Kozo Inada
"All of my music is ruled by one philosophy. The best way for me to create my music is to ignore all conscious sensory input, which places me in a type of subconscious realm with stillness and motion, giving me a feeling of harmony without perception. After you discover this niche, you will identify a feeling that can totally devastate you afterwards. With the aim of expressing this feeling, I use symbolic an realistic sounds, which are very different from each other, while maintaining harmony. With a computer, utilizing natural rules, I continuously strive to make music that produces a perfect audio stream that will carry the listener to this place of harmony" (K.I.)

Peter Duimelinks
Peter Duimelinks' music activities date back to the mid eighties, in a time in which he co-founded the musique concrete group THU20 with a.o. Roel Meelkop and Jos Smolders. Working with THU20 was of vital importance to Duimelinks and it shaped his ideas and concepts about sound and how to work with it. Traces of this period can still be heard in his more contemporary solowork, which usually consists of fieldrecordings sometimes heavily reworked but mostly used in it's pure form, and then organised into a composition. His other activities include working with Kapotte Muziek and Goem, and the V2_Archief music/sound label.

toy.bizarre
"In june 1985, I decided to work under the name of toy.bizarre, while my best friend and I were recording crickets singing in a pit along a small countryside road, in the sunset. Back at home, I decided to go on recording, put on tape, every little sound of my environment, of the sonic world I was surrounded by. My actual work is focused on "places", their characteristics and their sound components; so the goal of all my sound compositions is to explore a place. Each time the process is the same: recording all the typical sounds of the place, then to compose sound pieces only with these sounds, through a sound sculpting process." (t.b)

Ronnie Sundin
Ronnie Sundin was originally known as 'Bad Kharma' (a pretty noisy project with a CD on Bonbon Records), but recently started to perform under his own name. He has worked in the past with Merzbow, among others. Under his own name, he has a more quiet approach to his sound-making: working with a Powerbook, MiniDisc, dictaphone and contact microphones Sundin is blending field recordings with passages of abstract electronics and 'concrete' computer composition. The sound of Sundin has been described as "quite nordic - being distant, but very close at the same time". His first album under his own name, 'Dreamsketch', has been described as an almost "pure musique concrete experience".

Howard Stelzer & Jason Talbot
The duo of Howard Stelzer and Jason Talbot has been performing for more than two years. They are an integral part of Boston's free-improvised music community. Talbot plays a single turntable. Stelzer plays a series of standard cassette decks and tapes, manipulating the motors and gears manually. Like many of Thier Boston peers, thier improvisations place a emphasis on space and silence. Stelzer and Talbot concern themselves with the development of a unified instrumental and gestural sonic language, concentrating less on preparations and extended techniques than on the performative possibilities of their chosen instruments.

Freiband
Freiband is the latest project by Frans de Waard, also founding member of Kapotte Muziek, Beequeen, Goem as well as solo projects such as Shifts and Quest.Tongue in cheek, De Waard calls this popmusic, music made out of popping sounds, rather then popular music, but entirely inspired by De Waard's love for popmusic. Since the inception of this new monikker, Freiband has played concerts in The Netherlands, Japan and a suprise gig at Mutek, Canada, 2001. The first CD Microbes' was released late 2001 by Ritornell, a side label of Mille Plateaux. The second one, Homeward, 15 songs full of melody, was limited to 500 copies.

Richard Chartier
Richard Chartier (b.1971), minimal sound artist/composer and graphic designer, has produced critically acclaimed recordings for labels including Trente Oiseaux (Germany), LINE (USA), Meme (Japan), and Fallt (Ireland), as well collaborative works with Nosei Sakata (*0),Taylor Deupree, and Kim Cascone on 12k (USA). His work explores the relationship between sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening. Both his visual and sound works have been exhibited in many galleries and artspaces including the Art Institute of Chicago, Fusebox (DC), the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Washington Project for the Arts Projectspace in Washington, DC.

Radboud Mens
Radboud Mens is a sound-artist for 20 years & living & working in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After finishing artschool and a study in audio-art/sonology in 1993, Radboud concentrated on the making of experimental music. He used broken down hi-fi equipment and found records, that he played with several needles at the same time, proccesing the sound with effects. Nowadays he works mainly with computers, samples and effect processors.Under his own name he has released many vinyl and cd albums on many labels. His music varies >from very harsh and/or rhythmic noise to conceptual, almost ambient-like and quite minimal.

FRANCISCO López, TIM HECKER LIVE IN MONTREAL JAN. 3, 2003
Francisco López will perform live at the Casa del Popolo in honor of the reissue of his first American release, "Addy en el pais de las frutas y los chunches". This is perhaps the artist's strongest recorded document, a personal favorite of López himself. His performance will be done using sounds from the release, which are dense brutal environmental recordings. The soundscapes are so dense and rich that they consume the listener, from total beauty to absolute fright. This will mark our sixth presentation of a live performance by the artist and they never seem to tire the listener. This performance is different from the events presented at the Darling Foundry and the Sala Rossa in that it will be a more intimate in style.

Tim Hecker will also perform a rather rare solo set by recent standards, although he has been performing out of town as well as with Fly Pan Am. Expect a powerful set of ambient music that is not afraid to get incredibly intense at times. This will mark Tim Hecker's third appearance with Francisco López.

This show happens on Friday Januar 3, 2003 at the Casa del Popolo, 4873
St-Laurent at 10 pm. Admission is $10.

The capacity of the Casa del Popolo is very limited so advance ticket purchase suggested. Tickets for this event will be $10 on sale at Casa del Popolo, Cheap Thrills, Esoterik and l'Obique. Tickets on sale as of Dec 15.
